TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, Tiger pattern
Artistunknown
Date1838
Descriptive NotesAccording to Wolfe this is an example of a Tiger pattern. Miura agrees but calls it a Sun marble, although he acknowledges that at some point it has been call Oeil de Tigre (French) as well as Tigeraugen (German) historically amongst other names.

The pattern is created by throwing several colors onto the bath then combed. Next according to Miura the last color is mixed with 'kreolin' which is creosote based and used from wood preservation, lime water and potash and thrown onto the bath. The reaction this mixture causes amongst the ink and the chemicals causes the tiger's eye or sun burst looking shapes to appear.

The primary colors for this sample are green, black and red.

Collection NotesThis example was scanned from a book cover.

Interior has marbled endpapers (Shell pattern) - brown/black, blue, yellow ochre.
