|Scrapbook Notes||The Lagoon Bottom|
Members of the expedition went underwater at the atolls to collect specimens from and inspect the condition of the lagoon bottom. They collected fish, picked algae from the bottom and checked general conditions. In some areas, choking layers of silt had been laid down, apparently the result of explosions chewing out huge craters in the coral and releasing thousands of tons of pulverized coral.
