Caption with image: The vegetation on Engebi Island, as on all the recovering islands, was of interest to expedition members. Engebi, near a succession of tests, had been virtually devoid of plant life in the middle 1950's. In addition, there had been much physical damage from bulldozers and other construction for the tests. The photograph, with Richard Billings walking across a clearing, shows the height of some of the regrowth, mostly Messerschmidia and Scaevola. Even the open ground was covered with grasses. 9265-18A.
