Caption in scrapbook: The Chief Magistrate
Anton DeBrum's position as the principal administrator of Likiep was unchallenged. A wise and kindly man of 56 years, Anton had inherited the DeBrum name and the DeBrum property rights on Likiep, and he had been elected, in addition, as chief magistrate of the atoll under processes set up in 1946 and 1947 by the Navy's Trust Territories of the Pacific. Furthermore, as the son of Likamju, a chief's daughter, he was an acknowledged leader in Likiep's matriarchial system. Jose, by marrying into a Likiep first faimily, had sealed his original title to Likiep holdings. Anton was photographed here with his daughters and grandchildren.
