| Scrapbook Notes | Eniwetok Atoll, in the Northern Marshall Islands, is roughly circular in shape and about 20 miles in diameter. It became part of the Pacific Proving Ground in 1947 and testing began the next year. Eniwetok Island, site of the Eniwetok Marine Biological Laboratory, is on the southeast rim of the atoll. The colorful windward rim of the atoll curves northward about 25 miles to another of the atoll's large islands, Engebi. The windward reef is dotted with islands. But the leeward reef to the west is characterized by long stretches of reef, white sand and only an occasional island.
The photographs on this and the following pages were made by James O. Sneddon, expedition photographer, on August 13, 1964. Navy Commander C.L. Kennedy flew Sneddon, Ralph Palumbo and Hill Williams around the atoll for photographic purposes.
The photographs are numbered in a counterclockwise direction around the atoll, beginning with Eniwetok Island. |
