| Scrapbook Notes | Goodbye to Bikini
It was time to say goodbye to Bikini before we knew it. The days at the atoll with the historic name had been packed with activity--visiting islands, working in the below-decks laboratory, riding in the wheezing old copra boat, keeping records up to date. The enforced togetherness on the good ship RAN-ANNIM had molded the party into a close-knit group and the ship's crew seemed like part of the team. But the days ticked off, the ship made a complete circuit of the lagoon and was off Enyu, ready to leave through the East Channel. Some of us might return to Bikini; others would never set foot here again.
The ship steamed through the channel just after midnight. Some of us, awakened by the sound of machinery, gethered on deck to watch Enyu Island disappear in the moonlight. It was a nostalgic moment, but it was soon gone. The RAN-ANNIM was again alone in the ocean and we returned to our bunks for the overnight cruise to Rongelap. |
