TitleLake Washington Ship Canal construction, Montlake Cut, Seattle,
PhotographerCurtis, Asahel, 1874-1941
Date1910
NotesFrom the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "At noon today, C. J. Erickson, contractor, will explode a blast that will join Lakes Union and Washington by means of a new spillway, part of the government canal. There is a small bank of earth keeping the waters of Lake Washington from the spillway.... The effect of opening the spillway will be to lower the level of Lake Washington about 2 feet below the summer height. Gates are installed at the Lake Union end of the ditch, and as soon as the water has scoured out the loose dirt, these will be closed, restoring the [Lake] Washington level for the present. Attorney Meade had pictures taken for W. L. Bilger, leader of the Lake Washington shore owners, plaintiffs in the suit to prevent construction of the canal because they claim they will be damaged thereby." See also Curtis 18965, 18967.
