| Contextual Notes | N&M Lumber Company was in business in Rochester in the early 1920s, with a lumber mill and logging operations.
Rochester is a community two dozen miles south of Olympia on Bakers Prairie in southwest Thurston County. When a post office was established in 1890, the name chosen was Key, possibly referring to Gate City on the west. At one time, the town boasted a hotel, large store and three sawmills. In 1904, the present name was substituted at the suggestion of John L. Nye, who wanted to honor his home town in England.
