Contextual NotesSol G. Simpson and his family moved to Mason County in 1887, where Simpson worked laying ties and rails for the Port Blakely Mill Company's logging railroad. He formed S. G. Simpson Company in Matlock in 1890. Three of Simpson's brothers joined him in Mason County, and two of them worked for him. Simpson Logging Company opened its first sawmill, the Reed Mill, at Shelton in 1925. Numerous other mills and logging operations along the West Coast have been acquired by Simpson over the years. This trestle bridge stood 190 feet above the river. After rail logging ended in 1947, the trestle was abandoned until the filming of the film "Ring of Fire" in 1960, when it was destroyed as part of the movie.

The Wynooche River river rises in northeast Grays Harbor County and flows more than fifty miles south to the Chehalis River south of Montesano. The name is an Indian designation, meaning shifting sands. The name was recorded by George Gibbs on March 1, 1854, for the Pacific Railroad Reports.
