Contextual NotesThe Kosmos Logging Company was in business from ca. 1939 to ca. 1958, when it was taken over by U.S. Plywood Corporation.

Kosmos was once located on the Cowlitz River eight miles southeast of Morton in south central Lewis County. Primary industries were logging and the mining of mercury. In pioneer days, it was named by Charles Hopkinson, who operated a water-powered sawmill at the mouth of Rainey (Rene) Creek, which enters the Cowlitz River. There appears to be no record of the name origin. At one time, the place was called Fulton. The submerged town of Kosmos is at the upper end of Riffe Lake, the reservoir behind the Mossyrock Dam along the Cowlitz River.

Cars parked at log are (left to right) a 1937 Ford 85 and a 1932 Ford Model B V-8.
