Contextual NotesFort Lewis is an army post east and north of the Nisqually River in west central Pierce County. It was established in 1917 as Camp Lewis at the start of World War One and covered about 62,000 acres. It has since been increased to about 94,000 acres. The name is for Capt. Meriwether Lewis, one of the leaders of the Lewis & Clark Expedition of 1804-1806 to the mouth of Columbia River. It is the military center of the Northwest and has sub-posts at several locations in the state.
