Publication Date1799
PrinterManning & Loring (Boston, Massachusetts)
NotesThis is the eleventh edition.
Printed on the title page: Designed, principally, for the use of young learners, more especially those of the fair sex, though proper for either."
Bingham intended these to be easy grammar lessons especially for females because he felt that the "young ladies of [the United States] are peculiarly subjected to, viz. the scantiness of time afforded them for acquiring an education" (preface).
This book covers the ten parts of speech (the article, noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, participle, adverb, conjunction, preposition, and interjection) as well as syntax and punctuation.
Contextual NotesThis book is typical of the American book at the end of the 18th Century. Papermaking was very crude in America during this period and was far inferior to paper made in Europe where a high content rag (cotton or linen) was used.
Gift of Elizabeth Ayer.
