A collection of verses that talk about everyday matters such as "Pudding and milk", but also encourage boys and girls to exhibit good behavior and to not lie, steal or associate with bad children.
This page depicts the verse "The Naughty Girl." In the story, Eliza cries and refuses to go to school when her mother won't give her a piece of cake. Her mother tells her that she should be grateful that she has milk and bread to eat and that she gets to go to school because some children are so poor that they can only afford gruel and must work all day to support their family. The illustration depicts a woman sewing and a young girl holding a purse and pointing towards an open doorway.
Contextual NotesA cloth spine has been carefully sewn on to help hold this much loved book together.
In 1831, the book was included by Lydia Maria Child in her list of best books for children ages five to six.
