The translation of the title is "High German Lutheran Little A B C and Vocabulary Book for Children." This was a German schoolbook published for German schools and for home schooling. This primer contains an illustrated ABC, exercises with syllables, and short reading passages.
"T" stands for death (tod) and tiger. The concept of death is illustrated by a skeleton holding an arrow and an empty hourglass. "U" stands for clock (uhr) and urn (urne). "V" stands for violets (veilchen) and bird's nest (vogelnest).
Contextual NotesGustav Sigismund Peters (1793–1847) was a native of Saxony who trained as a printer in Leipzig before emigrating to the United States in the 1820s. From 1823 to 1828 he worked as a printer in partnership with John Moser in Carlisle, then in 1828 moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. "He is considered one of the most significant printers of ephemera and broadsides for the Pennsylvania Germans" (Pennsylvania German Broadside: A History and Guide, by Don Yoder, 2005).
