Game board with cardboard slipcase with publisher's color printed pictorial label pasted on front. The game itself has been rebacked with linen.
The game begins with Adam and Eve and continues to the ascension and marriage of Queen Victoria. At the center of the board is a portrait of George Prince of Wales (later George IV) attributed to Robert Cruikshank.
This game is missing its instructions, however, based on similar games produced at the same time, it is probable that this game was played with a tetotum (a kind of die with four sides) and colored markers for each player. There was also a rules booklet which gave "brief descriptions of each compartment and some directions, and at the end of the booklet were longer descriptions of some of the subjects, which had to be read aloud if a player landed on a relevant number." | Contextual Notes | John Wallis, with his sons John Wallis Jr. and Edward Wallis, was the most prolific publisher of board games of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Most British board games about history that were created at this time were focused on events that specifically affected the British Isles. They often began with the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and were centered around George III. This board game is unusual because it begins with Adam and Eve. A reworked version of the game was published in about 1840, and instead of the portrait of George, there were five compartments that included King William IV and Queen Victoria, the marriage of Queen Victoria, and a railway train.
