| Notes | Chapbook with uncolored woodcut illustrations. A collection of illustrated verses that seeks to instill good moral and social behavior in children. Some of these are cautionary tales including "Poisonous fruit" and "Dangerous Sport" (about a boy burning himself while playing with a hot poker). Others point to good social and familial behavior and include titles such as "Going to bed", and "Telling Falsehoods (about a boy who lies about drowning the family cat). Yet others encourage religious fervor as exemplified by the the mournful complaint of "The Orphan" who has no one to depend on except God. This is the illustration that accompanies the verse entitled "The Fan." Maria receives money from her aunt and decides to go to town with her sister to buy a fan. On the way, they encounter an old, lame man and Maria decides to give her money to him instead if buying the fan thus extolling the virtues of selflessness. |
