Part of the "Cheap Repository" series. Howard and Evans are listed as "Printers to the Cheap Repository for Moral and Religious Tracts."
Includes verses designed to teach children moral behavior. The Divine Song titles include: "Against scoffing and calling names", "Against evil company", "and Obedience to parents". Also included is a section of the "Ten Commandments out of the Old Testament put into short rhymes for Children" and a section for "A Slight Specimen of Moral Songs" one of which speaks to the detriment of being a sluggard.
This page is titled "Against Pride in Clothes" and explains how the richest dress is not the outward clothes we wear but the "inward adornings of the mind." By turning one's mind to knowledge, virtue, truth, and grace, one becomes more Christ-like and more likely to gain God's approval in heaven.
|Contextual Notes||Isaac Watts was a renowned English theologian and hymnodist who published popular children's verse with religious and moral content.|
This chapbook is uncut but has a single stitch holding the book together. It is remarkable that it has survived so long without being opened.
