| Notes | Illustrated with chromolithographs. Part of the "Uncle John's Drolleries" series. This series was advertised in McLoughlin Bros. publisher's catalogs between 1876 and at least 1886. This copy is in publisher's color printed stiff yellow paper wrappers; title in green and red, series statement, imprint, and statement of responsibility in black; cover illustration of child holding up slate, reverse of p. [15] with a different background; back cover illustration reverse of p. [2] with variant details. An abbreviated version of the well-known counting rhyme "Ten Little Niggers" in which the couplets are written in dialect, the depictions are stereoptyical, the stupidity of the subjects is implied, and there is derogatory reference to "nigs" throughout the song. The illustration depicts the five boys as men who are about to be married. They are all kneeling along with five women in front of a preacher. The accompanying verse is "Five little niggers being calculating men, each added one apiece, to make their number ten." |
