A conduct of life guide for youth that covers topics such as cleanliness, drunkenness, table behavior, rules for conversation, and directing servants. Also included are biblical and historical lessons, excerpts from writings by "dramatic writers" and a section on elocution entitled "Elements of Gesture."
This plate depicts two young men portraying the correct posture and gestures when listening to and presenting speeches. A previous owner of the book has doodled on one of the faces.
Contextual NotesThis book is very typical of imprints from the United States prior to 1800. The paper is of very poor quality in comparison to English paper with its high rag content.
