Volume two of two. An abridgement of Hume's "History of England." Short lessons about English history beginning with the reign of Edward VI and ending with the reign of George II. Printer's error: on the title page of this volume, "prints" is spelled "pirnts." |
| Contextual Notes | Sarah Trimmer was known as the "Guardian of Education." She not only wrote textbooks, but also founded a number of Sunday Schools and schools for the poor. Despite her condemnation of fairy tales, Mrs. Trimmer believed that learning should be made attractive to children, and she designed lessons and accompanying volumes of illustrations about ancient, Roman, English and Scripture history, which were first published by John Marshall in the 1780-90s and then reissued by Harris, Hatchard and Tabart at the beginning of the next century. The early editions were sold with separate sets of prints that could be hung on the wall. In later editions the prints were bound into books, some integrated in with the text. These works became immensely popular with children and their mothers alike. |
