Dick Whittington and His Cat is a British folk tale that has often been adapted for stage pantomimes and other adaptations. It tells of a poor boy in the 14th century who becomes a wealthy merchant and eventually the Lord Mayor of London because of the ratting abilities of his cat. The character of the boy is named for a real life person, Richard Whittington, but there is no evidence that Whittington had a cat. (Source: Wikipedia)
The frontispiece has a hand colored picture of a cat with the caption in verse: "Behold a cat whose merit wants a name: 'Twas she that rais'd poor Whittington to fame: E'en so shall Providence provide for those Who duly honour him, and keep his laws".
Contextual NotesThis chapbook series contained cautionary tales, adventure stories, alphabets, natural histories, moral lessons, cries, and reading lessons in poetry and prose. Each volume contained 15-50 pages bound with card wrappers bearing illustrations of no relevance to the books' contents, and were issued either colored or plain.
