| Notes | Illustrated with hand colored lithographs. All pages have blank versos and blank pages are inserted between some pages of the text. This story follows a route travelled frequently by many English people of the period. It describes a voyage from London through the Strait of Gibraltar and on to Egypt, Yemen, and finally India. Although travel and geography books became popular with the 19th century educator, most were illustrated with small, rather inadequate pictures. The illustrations in this book are sophisticated in their detail and suggest that the artist probably travelled to these distant places. In addition, the text often refers to first person narrative: "The Welcome received on the Strand, as the steamer we quit, and in India we land". "A is the agent in charge of the mail, who receives all the bags, as they come by the rail." The illustration depicts a man standing next to a pile of mail bags with destination names written on them that include Malta, Calcutta, Bombay, Gibraltar, etc. In the background are ships and a train. "B is the Bentinck, 500 horse power, the Blue Peter is up, and she sails in an hour." The illustration depicts a large ship setting sail. |
