| Notes | Illustrated with uncolored wood engravings. The engravings are variously signed by Elias J. Whitney, Frederick M. Coffin, Henry Walker Herrick, William H. Thwaites, Edward Bookhout, J. Augustus Bogert, Robert M. Bogart and Robert S. Bross, James H. Richardson and Thomas Cox, N. Orr & Co., Charles F. Damoreau, William Howland, Phineas F. Annin, Johannes Adam Simon Oertel, John D. Felter, Albert Bobbett and Edward Hooper, and John M. Stafford. This little book contains verse and text with religious overtones and moral instruction that point out a child's good and bad behavior. This page depicts "The heathen mother" who has less love for their little ones than our Christian mothers have, and in many cases kill them to get them out of the way or to please their false gods. The illustration shows an alligator approaching a baby who has been left to die by his mother who stands on the shore watching. |
