A collection of illustrated verses that seeks to instill good moral and social behavior in children. Some of these are cautionary tales including "Poisonous fruit" and "Dangerous Sport" (about a boy burning himself while playing with a hot poker). Others point to good social and familial behavior and include titles such as "Going to bed", and "Telling Falsehoods (about a boy who lies about drowning the family cat). Yet others encourage religious fervor as exemplified by the the mournful complaint of "The Orphan" who has no one to depend on except God.
Contextual NotesThe first American edition of this title was published by Jacob Johnson in two parts in 1808.
