| Notes | Illustrated with uncolored wood engravings. A collection of verses that talk about everyday matters such as "Pudding and milk", but also encourage boys and girls to exhibit good behavior and to not lie, steal or associate with bad children. The illustration on the front cover corresponds to a verse on p. 14 entitled "Lazy Jane", a story about a girl who preferred to romp with naughty girls and boys in lieu of minding her books at school. As a result she grew up a dunce without skills to earn a living and thus became a vagabond without any friends. |
| Contextual Notes | A cloth spine has been carefully sewn on to help hold this much loved book together. In 1831, the book was included by Lydia Maria Child in her list of best books for children ages five to six. |
