| Notes | Chapbook with wood engraved illustrations by John L. Magee (one signed). Possibly engraved by Samuel Putnam Avery due to the similarities between this work and his work in the "Illuminated American Primer" (c. 1844). This little book contains two sets of illustrated alphabets, the first without text and the second with letters accompanied by an illustration and a single word. It also includes a few illustrated verses that point out good behavior in children. Printed on the cover: Claremont Edition Copyrighted in 1847 by Simeon Ide, an agent for the Claremont Manufacturing Company. |
| Contextual Notes | John L. Magee was a lithographer, cartoonist, and genre painter who worked for lithographers in New York City from 1844 to 1847. He then opened his own establishment in Philadelphia in 1850 and worked there professionally for the next two decades. The Claremont Manufacturing Company was formed in 1832. Although primarily concerned with real estate speculation and development, the company also operated a printing press under the direction of their agent, Simeon Ide. |
