| Notes | Chapbook with uncolored woodcut illustrations. Includes the letters of the alphabet and lessons with one syllable words. The eight illustrations accompanying these lessons portray children engaged in "good" behavior (praying and giving alms), and "bad" behavior (fighting and being punished by their parents). The back cover advertises other "school-books sold by James Kendrew." |
| Contextual Notes | James Kendrew was well known for his chapbook publications. He started printing in York in either 1801 or 1803 according to his biographer, Roger Davis, and is presumed to have remained there until his death in 1841. |
