| Notes | Illustrated with an uncolored woodcut frontispiece. This, the probable first edition, has the portrait of Prince Lee Boo cut out and remounted on the verso of the endpaper. Prince Lee Boo was the Palau Islander brought back to England by Captain Wilson, after the wreck of the "Antelope" and who died in England in 1784 from smallpox. Written in the advertisement: The compiler of the following sheets, on perusing Mr. Keate's account of Captain Wilson's shipwreck near the Pelew Islands was so struck with the character of the young prince, an inhabitant of one of those islands who accompanied Captain Wilson to England, that he felt impelled by an irresistable desire to give a sketch of his character tio the young people of this country.... The original intention of the compiler was to have given merely a unique history of this remarkable youth; but, in arranging the materials, he found it indispensable (in order to introduce him to the acquaintance of his young friends) to give a slight view of Captain Wilson's unfortunate shipwreck, his residence on the island, his acquaintance with the natives during his day, & to show what means Lee Boo became visitor to this country. On the whole if in this little abstract he has contributed to the amusment (and, what with him has much more weight, to the instruction and edification of the juvenile world), he will think the few hours of his time that it has taken up have not been employed in vain. |
| Contextual Notes | An enormously popular tale in print by Newbery and then John Harris through the mid-19th century. An 1844 review described Lee Boo as "a beautiful character to live in the hearts of all children." |
