| Notes | Illustrated with hand colored wood engravings. All pages have blank versos. Each of the letters of the alphabet are represented by both a flower and a fruit, and are accompanied by a short verse that describes the flower and fruit. These pages depict "Q" for quince and quickset; "R" for rose and raspberry; "S" for strawberry and sweet-william; "T" for tulip and tamarind; "U" for upas and under-leaved cyder; "V" for violet, verbena, and Virginia stock; "W" for walnut and wall-flower; "X" for xanthium and xylon; "Y" for yellow gention and yew; and "Z" for zante dates and zebra orchis. |
| Contextual Notes | Thomas Dean's publishing company was located at Threadneedle Street from c. 1800-1855, at Ludgate Hill from 1856-1870, and at Fleet Street from 1871-1890. He published under the name Thomas Dean from c. 1800-1810, as Dean and Munday from 1811-1842, as Dean & Company from 1843-1846, and as Dean & Son from 1847 onward. |
