This page depicts balls, boats, and cars with instructions to color them blue, red or yellow. According to the instructions to the teacher on the edge of the page, the purpose of this exercise is to "give practice identifying the primary colors and in recognizing the color words and the words 'a' and 'boat.'" |
| Contextual Notes | The Dick and Jane series was used in the United States to teach children to read from the 1930's to the 1970s and relied on sight reading and repetition. When studies increasingly supported phonics as a more effective method of learning to read, the series became less popular. |
