Contextual NotesHokusai Katsushika was a Japanese painter and printmaker during the Edo perid. During this time, he was considered to be Japan's leading expert on Chinese painting.

The wooden blocks for this book were created in 1812 but this printing from the original blocks was probably made during the Meiji period (late 19th C.) based on the design of the covers and the paper used.
