| Notes | Uncolored woodcut illustrations. Inside of unfolded battledore showing the upper and lower case alphabet, the numbers 1 through 9 and 0, and two lessons. The first lesson gives a list of two-letter syllables and the second lesson gives a list of three-letter words. The illustrations depict a woman using a spinning wheel, a woman and cherub in the ocean, and a woman and dog inside of a house. |
| Contextual Notes | Battledores were usually made of thick paper folded into thirds. They typically included the alphabet in both capital and small letters, pairs of letters for phonics lessons, letters out of order to help children distinguish between different letters, a prayer or short story, and illustrations of biblical or everyday scenes that children would have been familiar with. They later replaced hornbooks. |
