NotesPartially unopened chapbook with half of the woodcuts crudely colored.
No. 3 in a series of 16 chapbooks.
Based on the fable by John Gay, this poem seems to point out that too many friends can be of detriment because then the responsibility of friendship is spread out among many.
Hare (who is strangely called "Puss" throughout) meets a series of animal friends (Horse, Bull, Goat, Sheep and Calf) but, in the end, meets the Hounds, "…And they poor puss in pieces rent, and thus her life was ended."
These pages depict a hare with a horse and a cow. In the background of both illustrations, two horsemen ride by hunting the hare.
