This author stresses the importance of the female role in housekeeping responsibilities, care of the sick, teaching, and especially in the moral upbringing of children. She emphasizes that it is especially important that women stick to and become experts in their sphere of primary duties in life - home and family. Taken from the introduction: "The present volume is offered to the public, dedicated to the American Females. We are living when the allotments and responsibilities of Woman, in her own appropriate sphere, should be brought before the mind in their true weight and importance. We need this, that the education shall be better adapted to her wants and condition, and that she may be satisfied there need nothing be added to magnify, elevate or extend her duties". On the subject of a choice of a husband, she warns that a woman should never let a task of this magnitude "fall prey to the idealities of romance and the sole guidance and direction of fancy". The higher the standards for selecting a husband, she argues, the "less danger there will be of suffering from falling in love and repeated disappointments". She also warns about such things as the immoral habits of extremes of fashion and dressing in the attire of men. The section on "Things to be avoided by all persons" includes among others: "Scratching or touching your head; neglecting to answer letters; spitting on the carpet or floor; drumming with the feet or fingers; touching any part of a person not usually exposed". |
