In advertisement for the first edition: "The great purpose of the Young Man's Guide, is the formation of such character in our young men as shall render them the worthy and useful and happy members of a great republic. To this end the author enters largely into the means of improving the mind, the manners and the morals; as well as the proper management of business. Something is also said on amusements, and bad habits."
Sections include discussions of "Indolence", "On Forming Temperate Habits" ( Examples of rational living. Indulgences very expensive. Spending time at meals. Water drinkers the best guests), "Dress" (Neither be first or last in fashion. Women often not misled by dress), "How To Take Men as They Are" (Six sort of people from whom you are not to expect much aid or sympathy in life: the sordid, the lazy, the busy, the rich, those miserable from poverty and the silly), "Use of Tobacco" (Tobacco does not preserve the teeth), "Female Society in General" (How it polishes and improves us), "Why Matrimony is a duty" (Seven great evils from late marriage), "Licentiousness" (Example of premature decrepitude), "Rudeness of Manners" (Wearing hats in the house).
Contextual NotesWilliam Andrus Alcott was a physician and teacher who wrote many books on the topics of education and health, and who warned young people about the dangers of courtship.
