| Notes | The frontispiece and half-title page of "Practical Morality" are illustrated with uncolored wood engravings. The rest of the book is unillustrated. This book is composed of advice from Lord Chesterfield to his son on topics such as: Awkwardness; Rules for Conversation (including Contradict with politeness); Good Breeding (including Carving, Chit-Chat, and Drinking of healths); Knowledge of the World (including Study the foibles and passions of both sexes); Dignity of Manners; Oratory; Religion; and, Employment of Time. Included are passages from "Galateo" a small, popular treatise on politeness written by the Archbishop of Benevento in the sixteenth century. This book also includes: Marchioness De Lambert's Advice to her Son; Moral Reflections by the Duke de la Rochefoucault; Dr. Blair's Advice to Youth; Dr. Fordyce on Honour as a Principle; Lord Burghley's Ten Precepts to his Son; Dr. Franklin's Way to Wealth; and, Pope's Universal Prayer. Also included is "The Polite Philosopher: or, an essay on the art which makes a man happy in himself, and agreeable to others" by James Forrester. According to the preface, the intent of the Polite Philosopher was "to make men ashamed of their vices, by showing them how ridiculous they were made by them, and how impossible it was for a bad man to be polite."
