NotesFrontispiece and half-title page illustrated with uncolored wood engravings. The rest of the book is unillustrated.
According to the preface, "This book is intended for the children of those families to which The Mother at Home has gone" and is "intended, not for entertainment, but for solid instruction." Children are encouraged to read the book with their parents in the hopes that the child will develop gratitude and obedience toward their parents, and that the parents will find a useful aid for moral and religious instruction. Topics covered include: Responsibility - Effect of a child's conduct upon the happiness of its parents; Deception - Various ways of deceiving; Obedience - Firmness requisite in doing duty, and Important consequences resulting from slight disobedience; Religious Truth; Piety - The Christian child in Heaven; and, Traits of Character - Why scholars are unpopular in school, and Recipe for children who would be loved.

Contextual NotesJohn S.C. Abbott was a parish pastor who devoted himself to writing after the success of his book "The Mother at Home." In addition to writing books about Christian ethics, Abbott also wrote histories, including the popular "History of Napoleon Bonaparte."
The American Tract Society was founded in New York in 1825 to publish evangelistic Christian literature.
