| Notes | Unillustrated. Printed on the title page: Fifth American Edition. Two volumes complete in one. The purpose of this book is to "rouse young ladies from a vacant or insipid life, into one of usefulness and laudable exertion - to recall them from visionary novels and romances, into solid reading and reflection - and from the criminal absurdities of fashion, to the simplicity of nature and the dignity of virtue." Written as a series of letters to "My dear Lucy, " the book is divided into four sections: Religious knowledge (with a list of proper writers); Polite Knowledge (including history, geography, astronomy, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, heraldry, and travel); Accomplishments (including needlework, embroidery, drawing, music and dancing); and, Prudential Conduct and Maxims (with respect to amusements, love, courtship, and marriage). Printed on the title page: Calculated to improve the heart, to form the manners and enlighten the understanding. "That our daughters may be as polished corners of the temple."
