| Notes | Illustrated with hand colored engravings. Fourth edition. Little vignettes that describe the varied behavior of little girls in a small village near London that the author visited along with suggestions for their improvement. Lessons are learned from the observations of good and bad children such as : "beauty is of no value when coupled with vanity or spoiled with affectation"; "although beauty and talents may excite admiration, they will never gain affection, unless they are united with good nature"; and "clever children will acquire knowledge quicker than stupid ones, but wisdom and judgement are only to be gained by time and experience". His advice to those children who are not very quick in learning is to not despair, and think they shall never get on, but persevere because industry has done a vast deal more than talent asnd in the long run they will succeed.

| Contextual Notes | In the introduction, the author states that this book was written in response to "Sketches of Young Ladies" by Charles Dickens. While that book was intended for "grown-up young ladies" this book is dedicated to all the "Little ladies of Great Britain and Ireland." "Works by Solomon Lovechild (a pseudonym) have been attributed to Lady Eleanor Fenn. Some doubts have been raised about this attribution, however, due to the length of time between her death and the first appearance of publications under this pseudonym." (Source: Open Library) |
