NotesChapbook illustrated with uncolored woodcuts.
Part of the Twelve Chapbooks series.
A young boy squanders his wealth on alcohol, falls in with a gang of smugglers, and is executed for his crimes. The author warns children to spend their money wisely and beware of vice.
"Two ways of attaining wisdom" is appended to the story of Young Oliver. In this story, two boys are warned against approaching a bee-hive. One boy goes too close despite the warning and is naturally stung, while the other stays far away and remains safe.
The frontispiece depicts an open book. Printed below the illustration: O write upon my mem'ry, Lord, The texts and doctrines of thy word; That I may break thy laws no more, But love thee better than before.
Printed on the title page: Oh, that men should put an enemy into their mouths to steal away their brains! -Shakespeare.
Contextual NotesThis chapbook series contained cautionary tales, adventure stories, alphabets, natural histories, moral lessons, cries, and reading lessons in poetry and prose.
