| Notes | Chapbook with uncolored woodcut illustrations. Part of the Twelve Chapbooks series. A story about a rich yet unhappy boy and a poor yet happy boy. Master William is a spoiled boy who cried "for he knew not what" and was "such a poor, whining, sullen, tiresome, idle creature, that he was a torment to himself and all around him". George, on the other hand, took care "neither to offend either mother or father" and "never failed to remember that all good comes from God" and was the "merriest lad in the village". When William loses his parents and his money and is forced to labor like George, he becomes hearty, strong and merry like poor boys. These pages discuss the rich boy recovering from the death of his mother and then finding out that his father has drowned at sea. The poor boy consoles him and the poor family adopts the rich boy as their son. The illustration depicts a man and an angel watching a ship at sea during a storm. |
