A lesson about teaching children empathy. The story is about Robert, a young boy, and his sisters who pluck all of the feathers from three sparrow chicks for their amusement. Although the sisters initially express compassion for the young birds and wish to care for them by capturing them in a cage, they are swayed by their brother who maintains "that it was better to pluck them just as they were, and that it would be much more funny to look at them jumping about the room without feathers, than to see them dismally shut up in a cage." As they are indulging in this cruel amusement, the tutor discovers their transgression and points out the suffering of the birds. The girls are mortified and declare that it was their brother who had led them to this cruelty. Robert sensible at last to his fault is punished by the reproaches of his own heart. The pity he feels from that moment for all creatures weaker than himself opens his heart to the sentiments of kindness and humanity, and forever changes him for the rest of his life.
These pages describe how the Robert and his two sisters contrive to "get the covey into their possession."
