A story about a fortune-teller who encourages children to behave well and study, and warns them what the punishment will be for misbehaving and idleness. As Crop states on p. 15 "idle boys never have horses, nor wicked ones enjoy the love or respect of their friends."
The author states in the preface that most children will be content with the promise of "coaches, horses, etc. [which] are the only blessings their infant understandings are capable of comprehending." Others, however, will need to be threatened into behaving well.
The back cover depicts "a studious boy" who is sitting at a desk and reading a book.
