NotesIllustrated with hand colored wood engravings.
A story in verse about an ill fated wedding between a robin and a wren. An attempt by a Hawk to seduce Jenny Wren after the wedding succeeds and poor Cock Robin is cruelly killed by a wicked Sparrow who shoots at him with a bow and arrow. Elaborate funeral preparations are made to mourn Cock Robin's death.
The frontispiece depicts Cock Robin and Jenny Wren standing over a pie and a nest with eggs in it. Above them is a sparrow with a bow and arrow.
Printed on the title page: The Courtship, Marriage, and Pic-Nic Dinner of Cock Robin and Jenny Wren, with the Death and Burial of Poor Cock Robin. Embellished with numerous colored engravings.
Contextual NotesThe earliest record of this English rhyme is in the 18th century. The verse about the murder and funeral of Cock Robin has become an archetype for murder used in fiction, film and music.
