| Notes | Short illustrated verses about good and bad children. Unlike other cautionary tales, most of these verses do not provide horrific examples of the consequences of disobedience but instead gently chide children for misbehaving. In "The Dunce" a young girl who refuses to learn at school is punished by standing on a dunce stool at the front of the class, wearing an ugly mask with donkey ears, and holding a bunch of branches. |
| Contextual Notes | Elizabeth Turner also wrote The Daisy, a very successful book of cautionary stories. |
