Special Collections copy is binding variant as described by Davis; in publisher's light brown pictorial printed wrappers; title and imprint within a frame on upper wrapper, with a vignette of beehive in center; publisher's list of "Penny books printed and sold" on lower wrapper. A chapbook with illustrations and short verses that describe various professions, trades and occupations. Page 30 describes a "Race Lists" salesman who sells lists of horses racing at Knavesmire. The illustration depicts a man carrying a basket covered with lists. Page 31 depicts a the Great Comet of 1811 that was visible to the naked eye for 260 days. | Contextual Notes | James Kendrew was a printer and publisher who was famous for his chapbooks. He began printing in York in 1801 or 1803 and remained there until his death in 1841. The comet that page 31 refers to is the Great Comet of 1811 which was visible to the naked eye for around 260 days. |
