"L for the Lads who by playing the game, have made the word "Anzac" a glorious name." The illustration depicts a soldier with his bandaged arm in a sling and a pipe in his mouth. Another soldier with a bandage around his head is holding a flame to the pipe to light it. Written underneath the illustration: Anzac: i.e. Australian New Zealand Army Corps. |
| Contextual Notes | Joyce Dennys was an illustrator, painter, author and playwright. While serving as a VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) during WWI, she was contacted by John Lane who asked her to illustrate this book. The images she drew were inspired by the scenes that she had seen while volunteering at military hospitals in Devon, England. |
