Printed in the preface: Intemperance is an evil, which still exists in all the land. Something has indeed been effected, by way of putting it in check; and the friends of reform have reason to take courage. But...the time has come, it is believed, when more must be done, in respect to children...It is the object of these pages to assist in this important work.
Cautionary tales that warn children against drinking.
In his conclusion, Goodrich reminds children of four things: 1. If I drink any ardent spirits, I am in danger of acquiring a habit of drinking them. 2. If I acquire the habit, I shall probaby become a drunkard. 3. If I become a drunkard, I shall not probably reform. 4. If I should not reform, my soul is eternally lost.
Contextual NotesReverend Charles Augustus Goodrich was an American author, Congregational minister, and Connecticut Senator. He was associated with his brother Samuel (who published as Peter Parley) in writing books for the young (Wikipedia).
