Printed in the preface: Intemperance is an evil, which still exists in all the land. Something has indeed been effected, by way of putting it in check; and the friends of reform have reason to take courage. But...the time has come, it is believed, when more must be done, in respect to children...It is the object of these pages to assist in this important work.
Cautionary tales that warn children against drinking.
In this section titled "What is a temperance society: a dialogue" a son asks questions about drinking and his father responds. According to the father, there are "probably three hundred thousand" drunks in the United States and "thirty thousand" intemperate men die each year. The father also states that there are "not far from two hundred thousand" paupers in the United States, many of whom are the families of drunkards. |
