The book is composed of short verses about children at play and pop-up pages that show children at the zoo, farm, beach, and on a picnic.
In his introduction, Nister warns that only "unselfish, good, and kind" children can read this book and that "There's 'No Admission' for the cross, the sulky and the rude."
This pop-up page is entitled "On the Beach" and depicts groups of children playing at the beach. Some play with boats while others swim, dig in the sand, ride miniature donkeys, and listen to two black men singing. Along the shoreline are three changing rooms on wheeled platforms.
Includes five double page colour illustrated pop-ups. Contributors include Clifton Bingham, Gray Severn, M. Hedderwick Browne, and F. E.Weatherly. Some of the line art is signed S. M., A. D., E. L. , and E. C. |
| Contextual Notes | In 1877, Ernest Nister took over a chromolithographic shop in Nuremburg, a center for toy making in the late nineteenth century. The company was at its height of production from 1890-1900 and at his death in 1909, the company had 800 employees with publishing houses in Nuremburg, London, and New York. Nister developed new ways of creating movable books such as the "dissolving picture book" technique based on the Venetian blind principle. He also developed new paper engineering techniques, some of which were patented. In addition, Nister perfected the use of three-dimensional, multi-layered scenes which he released as "Panorama Picture Books." The company survived World War I but closed in 1927.
